🟨 Causes and Solutions for Students Who Are Not Fluent Readers
Tuesday June 9, 2026 9:30am - 10:30am MDT
Many schools across the nation now require screeners to be given. Most screeners being used include a measure of oral reading fluency (ORF). The question is, do we know what to do when a student scores below the benchmark on an ORF assessment? This session will peel back the layers of literacy instruction based on data and informal diagnostic tools to plan instruction for students who are disfluent readers.

🟨 Scaffolding Complex Texts
Tuesday June 9, 2026 9:30am - 10:30am MDT
Struggling readers, specifically those who have not mastered the code, often lack access to the very resources that they need to build vocabulary and background knowledge - complex, grade-level texts.  Instead, they are given less rigorous (leveled) texts in core instruction, reducing instruction in grade-level standards.  The instructional conundrum for educators is this. How can students comprehend complex texts that are challenging for them to read?  The answer lies in instructional scaffolds. This session will model teacher practices that can be implemented immediately to help struggling readers read and learn from rigorous texts.  It’s time to stop differentiating the text and instead differentiate the instructional scaffolds to ensure equitable access to challenging content.

Target audience: educators, leaders in grades 3-12

Participant Objectives:
  1.  Examine common misconceptions, assumptions, or barriers related to the topic and their impact on instructional practice and student outcomes.

The Project for Adolescent Literacy (PAL) is a teacher-centered initiative to build awareness around, and solutions for, older students who are not yet reading at grade level. Created by, and for, educators who work with adolescents who are not reading at grade level, PAL seeks to identify what works (materials, curricula, strategies, and supportive policies) and tell the stories of educators and students who have seen success.

PAL will showcase their national and local work that centers the needs of teachers and students to improve adolescent literacy. Participants will learn about the project, explore tools and resources designed by PAL and its Learning Community, and start drafting their own pathway toward teacher-centered professional learning.

Participant Outcomes (3-4 intended outcomes for know, do, how apply. 200 words)
  • Participants will understand the mission and vision of the Project for Adolescent Literacy (PAL): To identify what works in adolescent literacy.
  • Participants will engage with PAL-designed tools for working with teachers and better understanding what they need to support adolescent literacy acceleration in their own classrooms and schools.
  • Participants will explore how they might design their own teacher-centered professional learning for their school, focused on accelerating adolescent literacy outcomes.

Fluency as a Key Acceleration in the Secondary Classroom
Tuesday June 9, 2026 1:50pm - 2:50pm MDT
Tight10 is a research-based and structured reading fluency routine designed for use across core content areas to develop strong reading skills. The Tight10 was created by Kate Crist and Dr. Ali Wilson - two experienced educators driven by the frustration of limited literacy tools in secondary classrooms. They designed it to be simple, effective, and usable across subjects with minimal training. The Tight10 combines a reading fluency routine and a comprehension task. This approach requires just 10 minutes, three times a week and is ideal for integration into existing curriculum as a  Tier 1, Tier 2, or  Tier 3 support. Session participants will walk away with research-based, ready-to-implement fluency routines designed for middle and high school classrooms. This session is meant for teachers, coaches, and instructional leaders interested in providing students science-based instructional routines to support access and success with grade level complex text.

Session Outcomes
  • Explore evidence-based practices that strengthen reading fluency for adolescent students.
  • Learn strategies for implementing high-quality, research-backed instructional approaches to support reading fluency in core content and intervention classrooms.
  • Develop actionable plans to enhance instruction by integrating evidence-based fluency practices that improve student outcomes.

🟩 The Project for Adolescent Literacy in Action
Wednesday June 10, 2026 12:30pm - 1:30pm MDT
